What is Achilles Tendinitis?

This is the term used for injuries on the Achilles tendon. What the Achilles tendon is, is a group of tissues that connect the calf muscles at the lower back of the leg to the heel bone.

Individuals who are hit with this type of health problem are the runners who want to suddenly increase the intensity or length of time that they run. It’s actually very common among the middle-aged group of people who are active in sports like tennis, track running and anything that involves running, but not as often – say playing sports only over the weekends.

There is also a feeling of stiffness or tenderness in the area especially in the mornings with which can improve with a little activity.

  • Repetitive and intense strain on the Achilles tendon
  • Ageing – for older individuals that are involved in sports in irregular time periods where there is an increase in the intensity of their usual running activities.

 

Risk Factors

There are several factors that can increase the risk of developing Achilles tendinitis such as:

  • Gender – individuals who mostly get hit with Achilles tendinitis are the athletes.
  • Age also plays a role in this condition.
  • Physical disorders like obesity and those with flat arch on the foot gets a higher chance of developing Achilles tendinitis.
  • Medical conditions
  • Medications

Certain types of medications can lead to Achilles tendinitis, however this won’t be covered in this article.
