fitFitness is an integral part in a healthy life. In this in-depth article, you will learn about the importance of diet and fitness to weight loss, why they are both important to a healthy lifestyle, and how Approaching Fitness online can help.

Diet is considered somewhat of a dirty word because it has been associated with fad diets. Fad diets are those diets that seemingly promise to help you lose weight but are generally pretty unhealthy and can led to a series of other health complications.

Some fad diets include the “five bite diet,” where you can eat five bites of whatever you want; the “baby food diet,” where you must replace your meals with 14 jars of baby food; and the “sleeping beauty diet” where you sleep instead of eat.

Fad diets risk starving the body of the key essential nutrients it needs to operate. Some of these fad diets can also result in failure of the heart, kidneys, liver, and other important bodily organs which can lead to death.

Instead of associating the word “diet” with fad diets, you should start associating it with what you put in your body. That’s what people in the health world mean by “diet.”  In order to have a healthy diet, you could follow the food pyramid or the updated food plate that tells you how much of what you should have on your plate.

According to the food plate, you need to ill your plate halfway with fruits and vegetables. More than half of the leftover space should be filled with a healthy protein like fish, poultry, beans, and nuts. You should try to limit your intake of red meat and process meats. The rest of your plate should be filled with whole grains including whole grain pasta, bread, and brown rice. Limit refined white rice and white bread.

You should try to drink water, tea, or coffee with little to no sugar and all-fruit juice. Avoid sugary drinks. You can use healthy oils like olive oil or canola oil for cooking or on salads at the table. Limit intake of butter and trans fats.

Fitness is the second thing you must consider for a healthy lifestyle. Most doctors agree than 30 minutes of cardio a day can help maintain your current weight, so you would need to do more than that to lose weight.

According to an article by Aaron E. Carroll at The New York Times, eating a balanced nutritional diet is more important than exercise. This is because your body generally has a specific number of calories it needs to operate. If you eat more calories than your body needs without burning them, your body will turn these extra calories to fat.

Burning calories are a lot harder than not over-eating calories. We’ve all seen the lists of some of our favorite foods along with how many push-ups, cardio, or reps we would need to do to burn the calories we’d be putting in our body. For example, a scoop of ice cream would require you to garden for 81 minutes, or walk for 52. You would have to climb stairs for 173 minutes to burn off a bag of potato chips.

Although it seems like food is the only thing that matters, fitness does have its place. Fitness keeps your body and its organs healthy. Your heart becomes stronger when it pumps as you do cardio, and so do the muscles in your body. Having toned muscles and strong bodily organs can help as you age.

Diet and fitness work together to keep your body in peak physical condition. As long as you are burning more calories than you are eating, your body will start to use stored-up fat to fuel your body, which can result in weight loss. If you are eating just what your body needs instead of over-fueling your body, when you hit the gym or go for a walk, your body will burn the stored up fat, resulting in weight loss and a happier lifestyle.
