Adderall in the Workplace: What Naperville Employers Need to Know

drugAdderall Abuse and Addiction: A Rising Trend of Abuse in the Nation

Unfortunately, Adderall has become a very popular drug, not for its actual use for the purposes that it is supposed to be used for, but for addictive and abusive and recreational purposes instead, especially amongst young adults.  This is a drug substance that keeps getting more and more popular and common as the years go by, and it is feared that, especially in Naperville, if the situation isn’t addressed and handled effectively then the issue will only get worse and worse until the crisis totally takes over in this particular area.  Listed below are some statistics on this that showcase the rising epidemic and crisis of this drug and others like it:

  • Almost 16 million prescriptions for stimulants like Adderall were written in 2012 – approximately triple the amount written in 2008.
  • In 2012, over 116,000 people were admitted to a drug rehab Naperville for an addiction to amphetamines like Adderall.
  • Full-time college students are twice as likely to abuse Adderall than their peers who aren’t in college.
  • Three times as more likely to have used marijuana in the past year (79.9 percent versus 27.2 percent).
  • Eight times more likely to have used cocaine (28.9 percent versus 3.6 percent).
  • Eight times more likely to have used tranquilizers non-medically (24.5 percent versus 3 percent).
  • Five times more likely to have used painkillers non-medically (44.7 percent versus 8.7 percent).
  • Ninety percent of those using Adderall non-medically were reported binge drinkers and more than 50 percent were reported to be heavy drinkers.

Naperville Adderall Abuse, a Sudden and Major Issue in Naperville Work Places

The abuse of Adderall on college campuses in the Chicago area and in Naperville in particular is a real and a growing problem.  A 2015 meta-analysis found that 1 in 6 college students misuse ADHD stimulant medication, and that almost one in three abuse such drugs in the Chicago area.  It’s being found now that as these students graduate, they’re bringing their habits to the workplace too.  Experts report that there is no reliable data to quantify how many American workers and college students abuse the drug and misuse the drug but it is known that:

  • Emergency room visits related to non-medical use of prescription stimulants among adults 18 to 34 tripled from 2005 to 2011, to almost 23,000. (2013 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration).  In Naperville, the numbers more than quadrupled.

  • From the years of 2010 to 2012, people entering substance drug rehabilitation Naperville center cited stimulants as their primary substance of abuse 15% percent more often than in the previous three-year period, and twenty percent more made the same claim in Naperville.

  • Supply has risen sharply, especially in Chicago which is now one of the prescription drug abuse and heroin abuse capitals of the world: About 2.6 million American adults received A.D.H.D. medication in 2012, a 53% in 4 years.  Use among adults 26 to 34 almost doubled.  In Naperville, use amongst this age range tripled, but the issue is still the worst with the college student population.

This is a cruel issue and it is quite scary and concerning to the state of Illinois therefore they will continue to raise awareness of the various offers they give at the drug rehabilitation Illinois.  If something is not done soon to handle or rectify it, then it is feared that the issue will only get much, much worse.
